Margaret Zupa, MD, MS

Dr. Margaret Zupa is a clinician-investigator and Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Zupa's primary research interests are focused on the use of technology, including virtual video visits, e-consults, continuous glucose monitors, and insulin pumps to improve the care of patients with type 2 diabetes. She is also interested in approaches to identify patients who are at high risk for complications, including those who have multiple comorbid conditions and complex treatment regimens, and proactively deliver diabetes care resources to these patients. In her work, Dr. Zupa uses retrospective analysis of electronic medical record data, as well as mixed-methods approaches to assess perspectives of patients and clinicians on diabetes care delivery. Dr. Zupa is also interested in family supporter involvement in diabetes care for adults with type 2 diabetes and novel approaches to deliver diabetes self-management education and support.

Dr. Zupa is currently a KL2 scholar through the University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Science Scholars program. In her current work funded by the KL2, Dr. Zupa examines the quality of care provided through endocrinology telemedicine visits for patients with type 2 diabetes, and ways to improve the process of virtual care delivery to better meet the needs of patients who face barriers to in-person endocrinology care. In addition, Dr. Zupa is the recipient of a University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute Exploring Existing Data Resources pilot award, through which she is examining the impact of a geographic factors, including rurality, public transportation access, and broadband internet availability, on access to and use of specialty care among adults with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Zupa also collaborates with colleagues at the Veterans Health Administration on projects involving adverse events related to insulin pump use and delivery of endocrinology care through telemedicine.

Dr. Zupa serves as co-PI for her division’s engagement with the Type 1 Diabetes Exchange Quality Improvement Collaborative, a national network of more than 50 academic endocrinology centers working to evaluate and improve care for patients with type 1 diabetes, and leads UPMC’s engagement with the pilot expansion to include adults with type 2 diabetes in this collaborative.

Dr. Zupa is also passionate about medical education and mentoring and is actively involved in teaching medical students and residents within the Division of Endocrinology. She leads a curriculum focused on introduction to diabetes technology for Internal Medicine residents, participates in multiple courses for medical students each year, and collaborates with multiple colleagues to mentor medical students and residents on projects related to diabetes.

Recognition of Dr. Zupa’s research contributions includes selection as the 2023 Frank Calandra Jr. Foundation Diabetes Scholar, an award for the Best Early Career Abstract from the Veterans Research Foundation in 2021, and selection for the 2023 Women’s Interprofessional Network Career Development Program and 2022 Focus on Fellows programs through the American Diabetes Association.

Dr. Zupa is board-certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism and Internal Medicine and serves as a general endocrinologist at the UPMC Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology.
